This time was mostly spent in Portland Me USA, but some years were in Bristol UK. I used bigger sketchbooks in this period, usually 11” by 14”, about 1” thick, but some even bigger too. These were more cumbersome and difficult to hold while you drew standing up so I usually used them with a donkey (USA: drawing horse) or clipped to a drawing board on an easel, all of which reduced their utility somewhat, because they were less instantanious to switch to and from. I continued to use a sketchbook as a means of last resort when the pose was too short to waste a decent sheet of paper on, or when the pose was not inspiring or the other students were more interesting to draw than the model. At this time I mostly used carbon pencil or graphite in my sketchbooks but sometimes reed pen or pen & wash too.
